The four on top had absolutely no protection from the elements, rocks, bird crap, etc. Not even those basic white adhesives over the hoods or roofs.

The four on the bottom were full wrapped in custom fabric and plastic  from head to toe.

Conclusion: Protection from leaky Audis is job #1.

LOL, I had the same thought, but they had Audi center caps and wheels. I think they were A6 models, but every Audi sedan is the same thing in a different size now. The top was all A3/4 sedans.

Conclusion #3: the bottom cars are going to a dealer that actually cares about cosmestic issues

I honestly think it’s to protect from movement and handling of the upper cars (eg hydraulic fluid), I’ve just never seen this level of protection before, even on ultra-lux cars.

The lower ones being A6's and receiving the protection would align with other automakers, I believe Ford only puts protection on GT/350 models. Ecoboost Mustangs receive nothing to protect them.

The bottom ones are likely the A8s.  Those command enough of a price premium that they warrant that type of protection.

A lot of shippers will remove the protective covers on vehicles that they put on top of a transport. It really lowers visibility, so for safety they remove the protection. If they aren’t lazy, they will remove them on the bottom ones as well. There is also the worry of the wind blowing them off the cars at freeway speeds for the ones on top.

Those protection covers aren’t really there for truck transport from the port, they are for long boat trip. They are actually added when the cars are secured on the transport ship. Removing them before arriving at the dealer is no big deal.
